If I remember (I'm sitting in a waiting room so I don't want to check)

- various clocks can jump backwards on UNIX/LINUX

- this causes all kinds of problems with timeouts observable in the
  Real World

- we detect backward jumps and compensate for them

- unfortunately we have no way to detect forward jumps
