I think of this one as more of a philosophical problem.  It is one of
a number of tests that try to do stuff in the build tree (aka
/source).  From my dogmatic point of view these should:

- build/install everything needed for testing up front
- run everything from the install tree

 I have poked it a little but it involves some very old parts of the
build/test system I've so far avoided :-)
