I just pushed 6b63517c68560d3d6d523aaca1199c0b48794778.

It is not well tested.  I ran the test suite but I gave up reading the
results since problems I might have introduced were masked by
pre-exiting failures.

Please try to keep master passing.  Before you check in stuff, make
sure that tests pass.  Be sure to check in any changes to the
reference logs.

So I have just violated this rule.
