    logging: cleanup initiate_a_connection()
    
    - use log_connection() through out
    
    - switch logging to the instantiated connection immediately
      (including {push,pop}_cur_connection())
    
    - note how neither instantate leave a log file entry (one is whack
      only, the other is silent)
